Join Danish poet and critic Janus Kodal, and Singaporean poets Yong Shu Hoong, Aaron Maniam and host Alvin Pang, as they read from their latest collections, discuss the zones of confluence and conflict between the East and the West, and consider the place of national cultures in a pan-European and/or pan-Asian concept. After the discussion, there will be a short open-mic session. This free event is organised by the Literary Centre

Biographies:
JANUS KODAL
After his literary debut in 1991, Janus Kodal (born 1968) has published five collections of poetry with Denmarks largest publisher, Gyldendal. His booklong poem, Maters of Nothing, has been described by critics as the first major work of the new generation. He is currently living and working as a full time poet in Copenhagen. He is also a songwriter with the distinction of having introduced poetry slam to Copenhagen, and a former instructor with the Danish Writers' School. YONG SHU HOONG
Shu Hoong holds a Computer Science degree from the National University of Singapore and an MBA from Texas A&M University at College Station. He has three published collections of poetry: Isaac (1997), dowhile (2002) and Frottage (2005). His poems were also featured in anthologies and journals in Singapore and overseas, while his writings have appeared in various newspapers, magazines and websites, including The Straits Times, South China Morning Post, The New Paper and MTVAsia.com. He has participated in readings and literary festivals held in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia, England and the United States of America.
AARON SHAHRIL YUSOFF MANIAM
Aaron Maniam (born 1979) received his early education at Raffles Institution and Raffles Junior College, where he was mentored by Ho Poh Fun and Lee Tzu Pheng under the auspices of the Creative Arts Programme. A government scholar, he read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Somerville College, Oxford University, graduating with first class honours before pursuing an MA in International and Development Economics at Yale University. He recently published his first collection of poetry, Morning at Memory's Border, after winning the First Prize for English Poetry in the 2003 NAC-SPH Golden Point Award.
ALVIN PANG
Alvin Pang (born 1972) holds first class honours in Literature from the University of York and an honorary fellowship in writing from the University of Iowa's International Writing Porgram in 2002. His two volumes of poetry Testing The Silence (1997) and City of Rain (2003) were each listed as one of the top ten books of their respective years by the Straits Times. He is also the co-editor of No Other City: the Ethos Anthology of Urban Poetry (2000), and Love Gathers All: A Philippines-Singapore Anthology of Love Poetry. Pang has also been published in international periodicals such as Atlanta Review and the English Review, and has read at the Edinburgh International Book Festival.
